AWS - Ocean Isle Beach Chapter
As a non-profit chapter of the American Wine Society (AWS), the Ocean Isle Beach (OIB) Chapter located in Ocean Isle Beach, NC, is promoting appreciation of wine through education.
In March 2022, the Chapter received Internal Revenue Code (IRC) Section 501(c)(3) approval from The Department of the Treasury Internal Revenue Service - Tax Exempt and Government Entities. Organizations exempt under this IRC Section 501(c)(3) are then further classified. The OIB Chapter holds a 509(a)(2) Public Charity status.
Today, over 100 members residing in the southeast corner of Brunswick County, NC and surrounding coastal area, along with over 20 local secondary chapter participants, make the OIB Chapter one of the largest in NC. The chapter provides a great opportunity for area residents to taste & learn more about wine varieties with people who share a similar desire. The chapter meets each month, except July and November, usually on the third Sunday of the month at the Silver Coast Winery in Ocean Isle Beach, NC. Continued success & membership growth, position the chapter approximately 15th in size of the 180+ AWS National chapters.
The chapter welcomes any AWS member to participate in local tasting events geared around specific themes, even members visiting the NC/SC coastal communities. Chapter Membership is open to anyone interested in wine and over 21 years of age. All you need to do is join the National AWS organization & contact our chapter.
Historically, the OIB Chapter was started in August of 2011 with only two members, Stan & Tess Barwikowski and a dream of raising the level of wine knowledge in their new hometown. They were very fortunate to have made friends with Dana Keeler, the winemaker at Silver Coast Winery who held a similar desire. Most of the chapter’s early members were friends, neighbors and acquaintances made at the winery who wanted to learn more about wine, while enjoying everyone’s company. From our early beginnings to the present, the Silver Coast Winery has been a major supporter of our efforts. They continue to provide us with a meeting space and support in order for us to hold our chapter events. It is with their continued support that we continue to grow and reciprocally many of our members volunteer to assist Silver Coast Winery with their ongoing events and are members of their Wine Club.

ABOUT AWS - NATIONAL LEVEL
The AWS is the largest consumer based wine education organization in the U.S. A non-profit group, the AWS is devoted to educating people on all aspects of wine. Its members include wine novices, experts, grape growers, amateur and professional wine-makers, chefs, wine appreciators, wine educators, restaurateurs, and anyone wanting to learn more about wine.
AWS ACTIVITIES;
Chapters: Local community groups of AWS members sponsor programs, usually monthly. Activities include: tastings, dinners, lectures, picnics, winery tours, winemaking and cooking demonstrations, viticulture conferences, amateur wine-judging events, and other wine-related social events. Guests are welcome and novices have nothing to fear. Chapters are self-supporting, so expect a nominal charge to attend a tasting, dinner, etc. If a local chapter does not exist in your area, the national office will be glad to assist in forming a chapter. All that is needed are a few interested wine lovers. Meeting can be informal and held in member homes or in other settings, such as restaurants and wineries.
Regional Events: Organized by regional vice-presidents, include statewide wine judging, contests, special tastings, regional wine conferences, regional picnics and dinners.
National Conference: Held each fall—a two and one-half day national conference and extravaganza of wine. Attendees become part of a tradition that has drawn winelovers, wine-makers and gastronomes together every November for over 45 years. Prominent American and international speakers conduct seminars and lectures on all aspects of wine appreciation, wine production, grape growing and cuisine. Members experience fine food at connoisseur luncheons and dinners, tastings of hundreds of wines and royal treatment by the finest American hotels and resorts. The annual conference brings professionals, serious amateurs and novices together to discover what is new in wine.
